Vegetarian Samosas

9th September, 2012 By: Cath

On the way home from our honeymoon last year the husband and I spent a few days in Melbourne and one night we had dinner with his Aunt and Uncle.  We got talking about cooking and Aunt T shared some cookbooks that she had gathered on her travels.  One of these books was The Moosewood Cookbook which is an American vegetarian cookbook by Mollie Katzen.  Aunt T kindly let us borrow the book for a while and I recently purchased my own copy of the updated version.  Part of the appeal of the book was how it is hand written and illustrated by Mollie, with a few photographs in between.

The first recipe I thought I would try was the samosas as I looooooooove Indian cuisine.

Chocolate Malt Marshmallows

2nd September, 2012 By: Cath

Only on one previous occasion have I attempted to make marshmallows and it was a little bit of a disaster.  They were a raspberry ripple marshmallow by Donna Hay and I must not have whipped the mixture long enough as they ended up being really runny and sticky.

I have had my eye on a cookbook called Marshmallow Madness! by Shauna Sever for a while after it was mentioned on the Bakerella blog that I follow here and here.  Part of me was taken by the squishy looking cover (simple things I know) so when I recently ordered a few cookbooks I made sure this was one of them.

The husband also loved the look of the book and asked me ever so nicely if I could make the Chocolate Malt Marshmallows first.

Red Velvet Rose Cake for Inner Wheel

26th August, 2012 By: Cath

In May I was asked to recreate the red velvet rose cake from My Best Friend’s Wedding Cake by the mother of the bride for a luncheon of the local Inner Wheel group in August.

The cake was to be predominately the same as the wedding cake, however as the symbol of the Inner Wheel is a red rose, a few of these were scattered in amongst the white.

Zucchini Slice

Zucchini Slice from Cath's Cookery Creations | www.cathscookerycreations.com
Although I have eaten Zucchini Slice many times, I have never actually made it which may be surprising given my vegetarianism.  When a friend asked me to make it for a work lunch she was attending I didn’t have a recipe at hand so I scoured the interweb for inspiration.

Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie

Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie from Cath's Cookery Creations | www.cathscookerycreations.com
At my primary school, we often had a day or week where a particular country was the focus.  One year was the United States and in the newsletter that came around there was a recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookies.  As the recipe is for the most ridiculously good Chocolate Chip Cookie, since then it has been the only version that has ever been made in my family.  As they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Yorkshire Puddings

5th August, 2012 By: Cath

As you may have noticed from previous posts I am a bit of a fan of Martha Stewart.  One afternoon the hubby and I were watching some of Martha’s vodcasts when one in particular caught our eye.  He was excited about the Roast Beef, and I was excited by the Yorkshire Puddings.

Cinnamon Scrolls

Cinnamon Scrolls from Cath's Cookery Creations | www.cathscookerycreations.com
The first time I had cinnamon scrolls was when a friend of my brother’s came over from Canada to visit about 4 years ago.  They were the fluffiest, gooiest and most delicious cinnamon treat I had ever had.  I previously have had a love/hate relationship with cinnamon but it is now easily one of my favourite spices (it is tied for first place with nutmeg).  Of course this meant I had to track down a recipe so I could continue making these myself.

Sea Salt Chocolate Snaps

22nd July, 2012 By: Cath

The latest Saturday night cooking show on the ABC is Nigel Slater’s Simple Cooking and the hubby and I are thoroughly enjoying it.  In each episode Nigel takes a well-known pairing, for example “Sweet and Sour”, “Sugar and Spice” or “Hot and Cold” and bases the recipes around the selected premise.  One episode was focused on “Surf and Turf” and even though most of the recipes didn’t interest me, being vegetarian and all, the last recipe for Sea Salt Chocolate Snaps certainly caught my eye.

Red Spiral Biscuits

23rd June, 2012 By: Cath

Since making My Best Friend’s Wedding Cake I have litres of red food colouring leftover and am trying to find ways to use it.  After a friend linked to this spiral biscuit recipe on Pinterest, I searched to find an actual recipe and came across one on another blog for some red spiral biscuits.
